When the data is right, the market doesn't wait
This week Moderna and Merck reported a positive Phase 3 for their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, given with Keytruda in resected Stage IIB to IV melanoma. It met both recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival. Moderna's shares roughly doubled in a single session.
The lesson is not about one company. It is that de-risked, novel-modality data still commands a steep premium, and large pharma is paying for it. With a wave of patent expirations between now and 2030 pulling billions out of established portfolios, demand for pipeline assets that clear a real evidence bar is going up, not down.
Why it matters for scientists. Breakthrough science does not sell itself. Disciplined de-risking is what turns it into value. Establishing safety, defining the patient population, cleaning the intellectual property, and organizing the evidence are the steps that let a buyer price an asset at a premium rather than at a discount. That is the work we do on an inventor's behalf, and it is why a de-risked, well-represented program earns the kind of terms this week's data just put on display. For the scientist, the value is created before the deal, in how ready the program is when the right buyer looks.
