What a co-development deal actually gives you

Founders often hear the word partnership and picture giving something away. Here is what a well-structured co-development deal actually does.

Up front, the partner pays cash that costs you no equity. Going forward, the partner funds the development you would otherwise pay for with your own dilutive rounds. Over time, you earn milestone payments as the program advances and royalties when it sells. And throughout, you keep the company, the platform, and your stake in the outcome.

Why it matters. Compare that to another equity round, where you pay in ownership, wait months to close, and still have to build the development and manufacturing capability yourself. A partner brings that capability with them. The science stays yours; the machine to move it forward comes from someone who already owns one. That is the heart of out-licensing, and it is why the model beats the raise for a lot of platform companies.
